Transport

The workers carry out most of the on-site movement of raw materials. APEC Kolath has one propane gas powered forklift truck which is used to load and offload trucks and move the larger tools between machines and to the tool room.

Goods are transported according to the requirements of customers’ contracts. Generally components are transported by road within India and by sea to Europe and South-East Asia. Air freight is becoming increasingly common as production problems have delayed the manufacture and shipping of components. Without air freight, schedules are frequently unable to be met. Some customers collect the finished components. APEC Kolath runs a fleet of 3.8 tonne trucks running with diesel fuel.

Employee transport

APEC Kolath owns a vehicle fleet consisting of 7 company cars for senior managers (Table 1). All of the factory workers use motorbikes, cycle or walk to work but the majority live in dormitories on site. No understanding of how far they travel has been obtained.

Company cars are considered a status symbol in APEC Kolath and a reflection of the seniority of the managers in the senior management team. The cars operated are shown in Table 1.
